IDS Sporting Blaster Rifle

Post by Luciana Endivain » 2012-05-17 02:38

Designation:
IDSE-SR-90 "Hunter" Sporting Rifle

Purpose:
To create a civilian legal sporting blaster used for hunting big game such as Rancors, Wandrellas, Wampas or anything that will be able to shrug off most normal shots from "small arms".

Application:
In a rare departure from most IDS guns, the Hunter Sporting Rifle trades the Dual XCiter technology for a single, lager XCiter and charging module. The gun is designed to deliver maximum powered shots against big game.

In a loose sense, hunting rifles and sniper rifles are about the same, both meant to be accurate and provide the stopping power necessary to drop targets with a well placed shot. Sniper rifles, generally, are more purpose built and are designed to be specialized weapons with features and tweaks to make them just that much better than their "off-the-shelf" hunting rifle counterparts.

Schedule:
2 weeks design
2 weeks prototyping
4 weeks testing

Technical Specifications:
Name/Type: RR-42 Rifle
Designer/Manufacturer: Luciana Endivain / Intragalactic Defense Systems
Designation: Sporting Blaster Rifle
Size: 83.6 cm
Mass: 4.9 kg
Effective Range: 700 m
Fire Modes: Single, Safe
Damage Rating: 90
Magazine: 100 Charges (from plasma gas cell). 20 shots (extended powerpak) or 10 shots (standard powerpak)
Ammunition: Blaster Powercell
Standard Price: 2,900 Cr
Special: Top rail mount allow for a variety of attachments including scopes, lights or laser sighters. Bipod optional.

This rifle is a single fire weapon that trades firing speed for stopping power and accuracy. Meant to be sold as a hunting rifle, this gun could also be useful for paramilitary organizations or law-enforcement that are looking for a relatively small and more mobile rifle that doesn't need to shoot invisible bolts or come with all the fancy bells and whistles military grade guns tend to come with.

Weaknesses:
  • Slow refire rate (single shot rifle)
  • Difficult to wield in close quarters.
  • Powerful shots consume power and gas leading to somewhat limited ammo capacity per powerpack.
Proposed Upgrades:
  • Increase power further if the legislation can be changed.

There was no shortage of guns coming out of the labs these days, that was for sure, though all of them were designed for specific purposes or niches, like the latest one which was geared to be a civilian legal sporting rifle. It seemed rather ironic that, while little different than a sniper rifle, it was able to be classified as a civilian legal gun just because Luciana had decided to classify it as a sporting rifle rather than a sniper rifle. There were rules, limitations and other such footnotes that defined where the threshold lay between the two different guns, but to the layman, both classes of guns were fundamentally the same.

Well, with the exception that sporting guns come in pistols, rifles, carbines and pretty much every class so really, it's more like there are two broad classes, legal and military, with the former being called 'sporting'. Luciana shrugged, not really caring about the legal issues so long as she wasn't in violation of them. The RR-42, affectionately known as the "Rancor Gun" though she had yet to test its stopping power on the beast of the same name, was a fair sized, hefty rifle that looked as though it was more assault rifle than sniper rifle, the bullpup design, thick construction and relatively short appearance. It also lacked the firing speeds that had by now become a hallmark of all IDS guns, customers looking for a rapid firing sniper rifle would be better served looking at the other ones though they were subject to a lot more legal issues that included severe power limitations, a careful ratio of power to firing speed having to be maintained.

Luciana didn't often use guns beyond a carbine and she seldom used those, preferring pistols, the blaster built into her right hand or left eye or a lightsaber. Even than, that was only when she found herself forced to be groundside. The air, and space, always called to her, the thrill of flying around in a StarViper made her feel a lot more alive than personal combat did, though probably because she always thought about how graceful her sister looked whenever they sparred, weaving around with a lightsaber in a fluid motion that, despite purposely holding back, gave the elder sibling a dancers grace compared to Luciana's more clumsy movements. Of course Crystala would argue she was being hard on herself, but it kept gnawing away at her, the fact she was denied the benefit of having a mentor and master to train her in the ways of the Force, instead forced to rely on technology to offset the perceived handicap, usually to ugly results that often fell well short of their intended mark.

Sighing, she tried to shove such thoughts aside and focus on the weapon in her hands. It would hardly be a match against a Force User, unless they were sound asleep and blind to the Force or otherwise incapacitated. But if the bolt ever did hit, the damage would be real, of that Luciana could be rest assured. Lifting the rifle up, she stared down the scope at the targets in the distance. It was a warm sunny day on Tralus, perfect for a day at the firing range, the sounds of blasters discharging around her as the other mercs worked on their aim and- literally- shot the breeze.

Staring at a target down the range, Luciana lined the crosshairs up with the head of the target and pulled the trigger. The rifle had some serious kick to it and she could imagine dislocating her shoulder had she not been fully prepared for it. The bolt, to her surprise, went wide of the target by a good inch, her lack of ability with larger weapons evident. I'm definitely a pilot. Could probably strafe that thing better than hit it with this gun. Luciana had a few prototypes constructed though she did like to at least get a feel for the weapons herself, it helped to be knowledgeable about her own products in order to effectively sell them. Maybe a hunting trip would be good... To Dathomir so we can test this gun's strength against real Rancors. That sounded like a good idea though she wasn't about to go to that world alone, especially as there were a ton of Force witches living there. I wonder if Cryssie would be interested?
