Slavery in the modern Galaxy

Post by Kane » 2010-05-28 10:16

Background: Slavery is not allowed under federal NIF law. The laws which protects the rights of full member worlds, however, also allow them to practice slavery within their own jurisdiction.

Currently, it has not yet been established if the air of the NIF is too pure for a slave to breathe - that is, if they are automatically considered free citizens should they arrive at a planet under federal law, or a planet on which slavery is illegal.

Certain vocal elements wishes to revoke the right of slavery altogether. Other vocal elements champion the rights of individual member worlds in their own territory over federal law. The most radical elements wants to abolish the federal anti-slavery laws and make slavery legal everywhere within imperial territory.

It should be noted that this only applies to full membership worlds. Federal protectorates and other recently claimed territories fall completely under federal jurisdiction. The Senate is set to debate and reach a new law regarding slavery, or confirm existing policy.
