Thessalia was indisposed to say the least, and unfortunately, that left her student essentially orphaned. It was a pitiful state to be in, and perhaps one he almost sympathized with. But, if nothing else, it also gave him an opportunity to shape her as he had helped shape many of the other in the order. Perhaps he wouldn't be able to do it to the same extent as he had with Thrakis, he knew full well that perhaps just the smallest of pushes would be enough to help him enough on his way. But then again, perhaps not.

Still, Jacen had arranged for summons to be sent, for Eric to meet him at an Opera house on Eriadu. Jacen was meeting with some minor dignitaries, and well, just having Eric there would be a great opportunity for Jacen to test his abilities at some of the basic force powers he was supposed to be working at mastering. Still, such situations were something he came to appreciate with Thrakis, given that he was able to push Thrakis just so far outside of his normal comfort zone. After all, by his best guess from reading over Eric's biography, this wasn't exactly the sort of thing he routinely did for entertainment purposes. Oh, this would be most entertaining.

Eric had been practicing what he had know while awaiting his Master's return, when a strange note had appeared in his quarters from a Jacen Wesiri. He did not have much contact with other members, due to his nature of training, but he figured it had to have some merit to it. Eric began packing up some bare essentials to get ready for a trip to the notes location. It was some opera house on Eriadu, he was unsure what the whole purpose of meeting in an opera house was. But who was he to judge before knowing what this was about?

Eric had just finished packing his bag and leaned over to pick up his vibrosword. He had just got a new sheath casted, since his had been ripped asunder during a training exercise. He made his way down to the hangar bay where a Sith Light Fighter awaited him. Ever since his last ordeal with one, he had one put on standby for him to practice with. He had slowly progressed with maneuvering a fighter, although he was still much better at handling shuttles. He got inside and did his preflight check and got a go from flight control. He punched it and got to an acceptable range to engage the hyperdrive, which he had installed for such occasion.

2 DAYS LATER:

Eric was awoken by the klaxons telling him they were reverting back from hyperspeed. He had decided to meditate for part of the journey to get a feel for the nebulas and stars he had been passing by. While he could just get enough of a feel due to the immense speeds he hurtled by them, it was enough to keep him on his toes. He reached for the controls, and began his descent towards the planet and scanned for the opera house that he was supposed to meet Jacen in. Once he had an approximate location he plotted a course for it and made his way. He found a clearing next to the opera house and set down. He then hopped out, leaving his bag inside his fighter, but taking his vibrosword in its sheath with him inside.

Armed Eriadu city police began rushing towards him, the moment he sat down. In most of civilized space, there was always something about landing a ship in a city park. But, as the unit was almost on top of him, their commlinks began beeping, and they angrily turned back, cursing as they went. This was probably their first experience with a dark jedi, and it probably wasn't the best of introductions at any rate.

An imperial officer, looking extremely crisp and clean cut, and rather professional, was waiting for Eric at the edge of the park. "Welcome, Initiate Hughes. I am Captain Ezra Roberts, 4th fleet, at your service sir." the man said in a smooth baritone voice, as he gave an imperial salute. Around him were a few lesser officers, and a few non-comms at attention.

"The Supreme Commander asked me to smooth over any unpleasantries that might arise from your arrival, to prepare you for the evening, and to finally escort you to his private box." Roberts said, before continuing, "The Grand Oaks company would be against you entering as you are, but the Supreme Commander has made arrangements with the Delco to get your ready for the evening. If you would, please follow me and we can get you ready for the evening."

Eric saw a bunch of men begin running at him full speed. Eric saw that the men had Police in yellow letter across their chest plates. Eric dismissed them as a threat regardless of the fact that he had very little training for offensive situations. He assumed his credentials would suffice, if it came down to convincing them otherwise. But to his surprise, they turned away from him. Then a man in a crisp uniform stepped forward and spoke.

"Welcome, Initiate Hughes. I am Captain Ezra Roberts, 4th fleet, at your service sir. The Supreme Commander asked me to smooth over any unpleasantries that might arise from your arrival, to prepare you for the evening, and to finally escort you to his private box. The Grand Oaks company would be against you entering as you are, but the Supreme Commander has made arrangements with the Delco to get your ready for the evening. If you would, please follow me and we can get you ready for the evening."

Eric nodded, and followed the man across the field towards a tailor's. Once they entered an elderly gentleman stepped forward and quickly began measuring Eric for a suit. Eric watched as the man measured him, and quickly scanned the shop for something more suitable than his robes he currently worn. His eyes passed by a nice three piece suit, and Eric motioned towards it. It was a royal blue set, the jacket had two buttons with a single pocket on the right side, the pants were well what anyone was accustomed to, and the vest had two pockets, but the pockets were fake pockets. The tailor peered over at the three piece suit and returned back to the measurements. He finished and walked over to the suit and checked it's dimensions versus Eric's and said, "I can trim it to fit. Very nice choice sir. Give me 5 minutes and it shall be ready." Eric nodded and took a seat, and waited.

5 MINUTES LATER:

Eric watched as the tailor returned with his suit, and the Captain walked forward to take care of the bill. Eric was motioned towards a changing room in the rear of the shop, and walked over to begin changing into civilian clothing. Eric hopped into his new outfit, and felt a bit out of character. He enjoyed the look and feel of it on himself. He had actually found out the suit was made of silk, and that was why it was so comfortable. Eric thanked the tailor and motioned the Captain forward to lead him to the booth he was to be seated at. On their way across, Eric made a quick detour to his fighter to slip his clothing and vibrosword back into his fighter. He did not climb up to get in to risk ruffling or dirtying his suit, but he tossed them up and over after he hit the canopy hatch to open it. This left the canopy open, but the Captain motioned over one of the policemen still in the area to close it as they continued through the large ornate double doors and into the Opera house.

After 2 minutes and a short turbolift ride up, the Captain motioned him to a booth. Eric entered and took the far right seat and peaked around the booth to see if he noticed any other occupants.

Jacen wasn't dressed as he typically was, but rather in an officer's dress uniform. Rather than the grand admiral's uniform probably befitting his station, he was wearing his admiral's dress uniform. Conspicuously missing were the awards and decorations that normally would have been worn on such an occasion. Still, everything else was in very good order.

"Ah, welcome Initiate." Jacen said, before referring to a well dressed individual who was standing next to him. The man was wearing a tuxedo, of a similar cut to the one Eric was wearing, and he hadn't given Eric much notice beyond a haughty sideways glance until the word Initiate was reached. "Eric Hughes, this is Dr. Addison Ames, head of the Ames Corporation here on Eriadu. Dr. Ames, this is Eric Hughes, of the Omega Order." Jacen said, going through some quick introductions.

To begin, I intend to test some of the skills. First, I intend to test your telepathy, more specifically, I want to test your ability to read the thoughts and emotions of others. Jacen projected into Eric's mind. Such things were always the first things necessary to be tested. He wasn't totally sure about how much Thessalia had taught him, but well, Eric should still have some proficiency of those abilities by now.

"Ah, welcome Initiate. Eric Hughes, this is Dr. Addison Ames, head of the Ames Corporation here on Eriadu. Dr. Ames, this is Eric Hughes, of the Omega Order."

Eric shook the man's hand, when Jacen projected to him.

To begin, I intend to test some of the skills. First, I intend to test your telepathy, more specifically, I want to test your ability to read the thoughts and emotions of others.

Eric shot back a response, I have some control over my projections. Just not sure of the limits of my projecting distance. The latter I shall see what I can pick up on now.

Eric turned away from the Dr., and closed his eyes to slits as if focusing on an object far out of his eye's normal range. He began to remove imprints in the Force one by one, to home in on one specific signature. He was aiming to read the Dr.'s mind, or at least try to pick up some of his emotions. He winked out the smaller ones, fairly easily now that he has done this before, and then worked his way up. He then came to Jacen's, which seemed to envelope the Dr.'s and his own. He began to slowly suppress some of his print on the Force, when he exposed a bit of the Dr.'s for a brief moment.

These social gatherings just drag on... I came to make an appearance and now I am stuck with...

Eric had bitten a bit more than he could chew on his first attempt, by trying to divide his still growing powers on so many targets at one time. Especially when trying to wink out such a huge imprint on the Force such as Jacen's, and an almost full Opera House. But he managed to get something out of it, instead of wasted effort. He shot Jacen what little he had managed to get out of the attempt on the Dr., and waited to see what he had in store next.

A passable effort. Jacen projected back to the other dark jedi. Hughes showed promise perhaps, but the lack of progress shouldn't be blamed on him, especially not at this stage with what happened to Thessalia. No, but progress was still very much needed. If anything, it gave him a chance at understanding how much further he needed to go. But further practice here and now would be largely wasted.

"Some of my researchers are in the process of developing an interesting additive for ion drives. The effects on the engine wash seem to cause it to dissipate in a less predictable pattern than when using traditional fuels." Dr Ames said, as Jacen thought through what to do with Hughes while still paying attention to the good doctor. Perhaps there were ways of helping him make more progress. Jacen concentrated some, altering his own aura ever so slightly, to make himself seemingly disappear, at least as far as sensing one in the force would go. Perhaps he could do more to help filter out the opera house in the background, but perhaps that would be making it too easy. After all, what Jacen was really interested in was his ability to filter out background noises so to speak, to gather an idea of how proficient he would be if someone would be needed to blend into a social function of some sort or another.

Try again. Jacen projected again, as the good doctor continued. "We're finished initial testing of its effect on a Boav ion drive, and haven't moved onto some of the other commercially available drives yet. To make a long story short, it causes the engine wash to be less predictable, allowing for an estimated decrease in the probability of detection, with the most noticably effects beginning a short time after passing. Naturally, at this point, we would be interested in offering to sell you an exclusive license...."

OOC: RL gave me a run for my money. :OOC

A passable effort.

Eric then listened to the Dr. ramble on about the ion technology he was trying to develop. It sounded interesting, but Eric needed to figure out what he was really doing in such a casual setting training. It was almost unreal at the level of casualness that Jacen had put on the training. It was definitely a new spin than what he was used to with Thess, she had been more about the ambush. Pick a place, and a time but not populated so that the gloves were off. But he was here, and this was now. Then he was interrupted midthought.

Try again.

Eric took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. His eyes slitting slightly, and he reached out to feel the ebb and flow of the Force around him. He was actually almost taken aback, when he did not pick up on Jacen's print. He actually turned to look briefly to make sure he was even still there. Once he confirmed it, he cataloged the thought to be asked at a later date. He would very much like to know how Jacen managed such a feat, incase he needed to use it for later. But this was a different lesson, and he resumed extinguishing imprints on the Force. Then almost as if with somewhat more efficiency, he managed to make it down to just the Dr.'s. Then he got what he was looking for.

If I can snag this Jacen fellow, with my new project on ion technology perhaps he'll fund us. This would make for quicker advancements and bigger profits.

Eric shot Jacen what he picked up, he was not exactly proud of the fact that he couldn't handle it the first time. But then again, how many DJ are this advanced? Eric decided to not let this discourage him, if anything it made him feel as if he needed to redouble his efforts from here on out.

(I don't know if you want to continue this or not. I'll try to get this to a close.)

Well enough given the circumstances. Be sure to master that. Jacen projected back to the initiate. Hughes advanced enough, at least by his own estimations, but there were potentially difficulties that he would have to work on.

"Dr. Ames, I'm not sure how useful that would be in its current state." Jacen said, purposefully hiding the displeasure in his voice, and instead left it along the lines of his normal tone. He wasn't upset that he was approached, but that he was sure that the researchers found some interesting effect, and then rushed to sell. As far as he could tell, they had not done anything to make sure how strong of an effect was, but then again, such research could potentially be useful.

"However, I'm willing to provide some small subsidies to your lab in exchange for right of first refusal? My adjutant can work out details with you to our satisfaction, I'm sure." Jacen added. It was obvious, that Jacen agreed to meet with the man, and then so casually pushes him out the door. Perhaps not the most polite thing to do, but then again, all that could be sensed from Dr. Ames was pleasure at getting to meet with him. "Captain Roberts." Jacen said, and a young naval officer appeared. With minimal formality, the doctor was shuffled out, leaving the initiate and Jacen the only humans in the box.

"Initiate, for one last test for now, tell me, are there any other living things in the box?" Jacen said, with his eyes on the stage, without turning to look at Hughes. In truth, there was one small pittin in the corner, opposite the entrance. Pittins were being used here mainly as an insurance so to speak, as in private boxes droids opened a potential for being observed. The pittin's color was rather dark, allowing it to blend in with the shadows of the box, as the box was, while elegant and well made, not intended to distract from the stage. He had also made sure that it stayed out of sight, and given how Hughes had entered, he doubted he could have seen it. But still, being able to detect a pittin from that distance was something that should be very doable for him.

Well enough given the circumstances. Be sure to master that.

Eric listened on, as Jacen began talking with Dr. Ames.

"Dr. Ames, I'm not sure how useful that would be in its current state. However, I'm willing to provide some small subsidies to your lab in exchange for right of first refusal? My adjutant can work out details with you to our satisfaction, I'm sure."

The room was being emptied out slowly, now Jacen and Eric were the only people remaining in the box. then Jacen spoke up again.

"Initiate, for one last test for now, tell me, are there any other living things in the box?"

For a minute, Eric looked slightly confused. Everyone was just ushered out of the box, yet Jacen just asked if another being was in the box? Eric decided to investigate visually first. he scanned around the box carefully with his eyes to reveal nothing. he assumed it must be an optical illusion of some sorts, so he tried using his Force powers to investigate. He tried using the same one he used to detect other Force users, but he sensed nothing. He decided to try another approach, he decided to slowly block out each person's imprint on the Force in his immediate area to see if anyone or anything was hiding in the box. Since Jacen was still slightly masking his imprint, Eric shrunk down Jacen's a bit more, and began systematically winking out a few more from people below him.

Eventually, there was a hodpodge of imprints left, but there was something that felt off. Eric didn't know how to describe it, it was not human, yet it made an imprint in the Force. He analyzed it for a few more seconds and he could not for the life of himself figure out what it was. All he knew was it was relatively close to him, actually it was almost on top of them. Eric lifted his hand and pointed in the corner of the box, and said, "There is something in the corner I am pointing in. I have no clue what it is, but I can discern it is not human." He then opened his eyes, and began to walk towards the corner to investigate.

"It's merely a pittin." Jacen said, as it Eric got into view of it, a small pink pittin. "A pittin might be a small creature, but still useful perhaps. Keep it, and practice being able to sense its location through the Force. Remember, arbitrary it might seem, but it can potentially save your life being able to notice things of that level of detail."

"Still, the proficiency with your skills has met or exceeded my expectations. I believe your proficiency is beyond what would be expected for an Initiate." Jacen said, before continuing in a slightly lower tone, "Yes, yes it is." Returning to his natural tone, Jacen went on "I believe you are ready to move on, and as such, I elevate your position to Learner within our order. Practice and hone your skills, for as your skills improve, so will the potential dangers to you."

"Also, as a gift to commemorate your first steps forward within the order, here, this is a gift for you." Jacen said, as he telekinetically levitated a small amulet from his hand over to Eric's hands. it seemed to be a black metal, appearing almost smooth, vaguely resembling teardrop shape, and upon closer inspection, edges going in all sorts of ways, though none sharp. Not that Eric would necessarily know, but it was a shield amulet, a weaker one that he had made nearly a year before, and while weaker than what he could make now, still, it was a very potent object in its own right. "From time to time, It will require small transfusions of energy to function, but with that energy, it will help protect you."

"Finally, I believe it would be most appropriate for you to have a more formal position within the NIF, at least for now. I would like you to go to the Nemesis, and take a position there with the pilots there, flying transports. Whether or not you will is entirely up to you." Jacen said, as he again telekinetically levitated a datacard to Eric, with the details included inside. Still, Jacen didn't end the meeting outright, and left an opportunity for Eric to ask questions, if he'd so desire.
