It's a long road (Closed)

PREVIOUS TIME

As he put the glass down and motioned the server droid over. Serron glanced at his chrono.

00:24 am.

..perfect...just another two hours and then sleep can claim me....

Serron never really slept well anymore. Ever since his life had turned into a complete mess not too long ago. As he closed his eyes he barely registered the droid dropping off another drink. The thoughs swirled, but the memories were so clear. As if it was being acted out in front of him.

...the wife. Human. Trixia. Proposed to me of all people. Made marriage a fun adventure. Challenged me to settle down and find a way to be happy but not constrained. Beautiful. Brown eyes like the colour of my brandy. Dark brown hair, like the chocolates I bought for her. Skin was white as my helmet. All things and more she became to me. Honeymoon on a different planet. Safe planet she said.....late at night. Intruder detected by alarm. Ran to fight them. Took them out...except the last one. Raised hand in surrender...and he shot her anyway......I killed him....but nothing. Life force spent....

And with that, his reverie ended as he entered the real world hard - by the sound of a man clinking glasses with another man in a toast. He scowled as he downed a mouthful of the brandy.

....fools. Taking me from the only thing keeping me even part together. Fools!....

His career - if you could even call it that - had begun so promsingly. He had advanced quickly to Captain. He had met his wife and married, and it seemed that major would arrive quickly. That would open up possibilities and perhaps even a stable posting. Or so he had thought. After Trixia had died he volunteered for backwater worlds. His record was good enough that most garrison commanders were delighted to have someone with combat experience. His soldiering was more or less the same, although he lacked the passion and vigour. He simply climbed into the cockpit and did his job. When the mission was over he cleaned himself, ate, and drank himself to sleep.

When he had free time, he drank. He barely read the news these days, or spent time on the walkers - that was the job of the techs in Serrons mind. He did not socialize, and wore an expression that put people off, and perhaps there was a little prejudice because he was an alien. He was content to simply drink away his pain. Unfortunately the alcohol had made him angrier, and had gotten him into some pretty nasty fights. His record had saved him and the fact that he had repeatedly voluteered for remote backwaters meant that there was really nothing to do in the way of getting him out of the way. He was simply shuffled from post to post until finally the commanders were sick of him and sent him back to central command.

It wasnt clear what would happen. He could be discharged. He could be sent to the front line as an infantryman. He could be shot. He could be imprisoned. Anything was possible in this galaxy. Only when you were arrogant enough to think you had it made did you get hit by the unexpected. Serron had learned this lesson in the most hard and painful way.

.....so many have died so I can get a bit of self improvement knowledge. Maybe thats the worst of it. That i actually became a better being becuase of it...

Two glasses clinked again behind him. Something snapped in the Falleen as he rose and turned around to the two.

"Enough! Some people are trying to drink!"

It was an angry challenge issued to the two men. He was practicly snarling when he said it. The words were spat out, almost launched at them as if they were sonic projectiles. The two men, obviously military men stood up with furious expressions on their faces.

"Listen green boy. Nobody asked you or wanted your opinion. Shut your face and sit down if you know whats good for you"

Serron downed the rest of his drink and looked at the glass. He shook his head slowly and looked at the men

"I dont think I will. Heres a present"

He hurled the glass at the first man, and it flew past, smashing into the wood of the booth and shattering. The noise dimmed immediatley as the two men launched themselves at the Falleen. Serron was big, strong and tough but he was also drunk. He had no spirit. Still, the blows between the three were vicious as they became embroiled in a kind of three man wrestle. If it wasnt so serious it would have been comical. Punches flew like wildfire until suddenly they were wrenched apart by S.T.A.R.S.

"Captain Dekku again."

"Happy to do my part boys"

The other two were restrained as the leader of the S.T.A.R.S. patrol looked at the bartender.

"Who started this?"

"Falleen did"

"Should have guessed. I'll be back for the tapes. Jones and Davis escort those two clowns home while Captain Dekku enjoys the holding cell again"

As the one who restrained Serron cuffed him and took him away, the lounge slowly went back to normal.

And strangely enough one odd man in a robe and mask stood. His companion was dressed in the uniform of a Wing Commander. This odd pair exited the lounge as the revelry began yet again.

OOC Note: This thread picks up from DETCON.

Alzoc III.

Serron shivered, but he was not cold. At least not temperature cold. He shivered because of the cold within. A snowtroopers garb protected him nicely from the elements and although a blizzard had whipped up, he was warm and comfortable in the suit. Falleens were broadly similar to humans in that they were both bipedal with the same number of limbs. Although armour sometimes needed a bit of working, it was not too much of a stretch and the key point was that he was safe from the elements.

As he trudged through the snow, he began scanning for the tree that Dravius had talked about and sighed as the snow seemed to hide everything. He exhaled again.

.....this probably the most exercise ive gotten in a while. Still...at least all the alcohol has gone from my body....

He grinned to himself. It was true enough. He had feel his senses grow sharper, his sense of awareness grow sharper as he had refrained from drinking since Dravius had talked to him. He had avoided the bad foods and taken water, and hot drinks and they had together not only flushed any alcohol from his system but more to the point had built his senses up.

Suddenly he paused, a lone figure in the blizzard and smiled.

.....the tree is on the mountain....

He began chuckling as he suddenly understood what Dravius had been saying. He quickly opened a comm channel to the base

"Base is this Captain Dekku. I need coordinates for Mount Shaak"

"Roger. We will upload to you as Nav Alpha"

"Roger. Captain Dekku out"

As his tac map updated Serron re-adjusted his pack and began trekking towards the navpoint. He grunted with the weight, but although it was heavy, it was a solid weight. A secure weight. He also knew that it carried the equipment that kept him alive and so he did not begrudge its weight. He simply endured and kept walking towards the mountain.

Several hours later, after a few food and drinks stops, Serron stood at the foot of the mountain.

....Mount Shaak....

It seemed to Serron that the blizzard that had begun raged even harder. With a sigh he paused for a moment while the armour's systems configured a route to the summit for him. It also told him that the mountain was about 2 kilometers tall.

With a sarcastic chuckle he sighed and began trudging up the mountain.

Although he had a weapon, it was next to useless, and any creature that was not a friendly federation soldier was smart enough to have hunkered down well away from him. He had to use both hands and his feet to scramble over the rocks and ledges and more than a few times he had to turn up the MTAS to full power to see through the blizzard so he could use the grappling hooks.

Although he felt the going was tough, the truth was he was doing well. Serron was big, strong and tough and Falleen's were covered in muscle. Although all his muscles were getting a workout, they were coping and he was making excellent progress towards the summit. Before long while standing on a ledge, he took a break to sip water and search for the tree and suddenly he realized that the blizzard had died down.

It had died down to such an extent that the armour was using only minimal power to keep his body at the right temperature and it had accounted for the fact he was sweating through exertion. He grinned at his luck and as he shook his head he noticed a tree.

As the macrobinoculars zoomed in he grinned but was too tired to do anything other than that to celebrate. Checking his equipment he moved carefully to the tree and levered himself up onto the first branch. Noting it was thick and strong, he climbed up the other branches slowly, testing the strength of each one before finally reaching the top. He exhaled as he took the top leaf, which for some reason had a red tinge as opposed to the others.

Shaking his head he descended quickly and then began his trek back up the mountain. As he reached the top he noticed a strange structure. A small prefab shelter...on the top of the mountain? A quick scan revealed that nothing else was present so he waked up to it and saw a simple control pad with two buttons. He pressed the larger one and the door slid open.

As he stepped inside he looked right, and then as he was about to look left a giant fist connected with the helmet, and the world went black....

...unghhh...what the hell happened.....

As Serron regained consciousness, he noticed his helmet was gone and he was placed against a wall as Dravius sat near him and the huge bodyguard from the cell stood near him. In between them a small fire burned, giving the masked man an even stranger look.

"Welcome Captain Dekku. You have learned the first lesson. Death can come from anywhere. You must be prepared"

"God damn it Dravius, I'm on your side! Why the hell would I expect danger from you?!"

"Death does not wait for you to be ready Captain. It is not fair, it is not considerate. "

Serron jumped up and reached for his rifle. Seeing it had been taken from him he hissed and bared his teeth as his skin tone changed ever so slightly.

Before he could blink, Dravius had leaped across the fire and backhanded him hard enough that Serron fell to the ground again.

"You feel guilty for your wife's death."

Serron got up and hissed again, before exhaling and nodding.

"Yes. Although my anger outweighs my guilt"

"You have learned to bury your guilt with anger. I will teach you to confront it and face the truth. Today you begin anew. You will cast aside your old self and be reborn. You will serve an ideal. Become an ideal. You will transcend all else. This is what I offer. Will you accept?"

Slowly Serron's colour changed back to the green it usually was for his species. His breathing had slowed and he nodded.

"Yes."

"Good. Disrobe. Your armour, and the bodyglove - you will not need them"

Serron's eyes shot up as he shook his head and disrobed. He exhaled as he stood in his undershorts and shivered, but noted that the small shelter was surprisingly warm. The bodyguard remained impassive and stood still like a statue with a massive battle rifle as Serron looked to Dravius.

"Three thousand years ago, there was a kingdom. It had an army of course, but the army was not enough. This was a kingdom of justice, of honour and fidelity. In place of the army, a clan of warriors arose. This clan was imbued with those values, and it saved the kingdom. The clan remained, and endured. These values endured until a time when the clan was corrupted. It was cleansed but at great cost. It was nearly destroyed - barely alive. But it lived. Will you Serron Dekku to bring the values of justice, honour and fidelity to this galaxy?"

"I will"

A hand slid into those robes and threw a small glass sphere into the fire which caused the flames to flare up angrily. The fire burned hotter and Serron felt sweat beads form on his body. Falleen had similar tolerances to humans and knew that the bodyguard would be sweating, although with Dravius you really didnt know what he was doing, thinking or feeling.

"Walk into the fire. Join the clan. Redeem your lost soul"

Serron stood and for the first time since the death of his wife, the burden he felt seemed just a fraction lighter. She smiled at nothing as he walked through the flames detached from reality. As his consciousness returned he noted he was on the other side of the pit with only minor heating of his skin.

"Kneel Serron"

The Falleen knelt, and felt the hard, cold floor. His body cooled instantly as his head was bowed. A blade was drawn with strange writing on it and the masked man touched him once on each soldier.

"Arise Serron, clan member. You have passed the test of ice, and the test of fire. You are now a member of our clan. You and I are brothers. We will train you, guide you and fight with you. And you will come to know peace. Now dress. Your ordeal is over. When you return home you will find yourself assigned to my ship, although you remain nominally within the army. Look for Lieutenant Bretorius. He will be your guide in all things. Return home brother"

Serron began dressing as his mind began to process everything. He smiled at the last word, probably the first genuine smile had smiled in a long time. He didnt know much about a clan, but he was know in the midst of a new family. One that wanted him. One that cherished him. One that would make him strong again, would fight by his side....and offered the most tempting prize of all. Peace.

Serron saluted the two as they saluted back and made his way back down the mountain, his heart and step light.

...ABOARD THE CERBERUS...

Flavius sat in full service uniform opposite Captain Serron Dekku in full dress uniform in an office on the Cerberus. Since taking over the ship Dravius had instituted a number of changes to improve its efficiency and it had worked well. He had also slowly but surely rotated clones into the crew so that the vessel would maintain security even tighter than it did before.

He eyed the Falleen opposite and decided that he wasn't quite sure what to make of him. Aliens were not unheard of in the Federation and there was certainly no humano-centric policies in place, but some people just didnt see aliens that often and Flavius was one of them. The clones were obviously human, Dravius was human and those he served with were mostly human. Of course he had met aliens, but that was in passing, and as such they had never really struck a chord with him. Now he was being faced with the prospect of serving with one and it was an entirely new experience to him.

...im not afraid, and I dont hate him, but its interesting...

"Welcome aboard sir. The Vice Marshal has briefed me and your information checks out along the line. We're glad to have someone aboard with combat experience like yours. If you want I can arrange a tour of the ship, or alternatively just show you to your quarters. Our mess halls have decent provisions if you want a meal."

"Thank you Lieutenant. I'm not sure any experience I have will be much use to you on this ship. I am only a walker pilot. You as I understand are quite the infantry officer. Soon I shall be saluting you no doubt"

Flavius grinned and shook his head.

"Trust me sir, we'll need your help. War has come to the Federation."

He saw the Falleen nod and stand up.

"I am ready to serve the Vice Marshal. Could you show me to my quarters Lieutenant?"

"Of course sir. This way"

Flavius stood and walked out of the office with Serron following behind as the door slid shut. Flavius knew that the Captain would be a solid addition to the crew, and was looking forward to another officer easing the burden on him when it came time for combat. Although the Captain was a walker pilot, walker pilots were not soft fleshy things. They trained hard, and Serron's combat record showed that he fought hard on the ground and in the cockpit.

As they reached Serron's quarters Flavius saluted as the Falleen disappeared inside. Although Serron's file indicated that he had hit rock bottom, there was a sense of vigour about him, and from all indications that was due to Dravius.

....strange and powerful man that one....

Chuckling at himself the Lieutenant headed for the Operations Centre. Always there was more work to be done.
