PE-Uni Classes: (Open: Everyone!!)

Post by Rikku » 2012-06-27 05:46

NOTE: The syllabus and holovid linked is from EVE-University. This is for simplicity and efficiency. As the basis of the Phoenix Empire's technology and infrastructure is based on EVE Online. In order to help people understand things easier, I am doing several 'classes' from an IC point-of-view. All classes will be posted here with the appropriate header. This is to be treated to be taking place after contact has been re-established, at a undefined point in the future. For further information please see the story: Phoenix Empire
CAREER-101

Rikku hated having to instruct. However, it was and could be very enjoyable. The subject of today's class was an introduction to common careers. There were of course other possible fields of professional pursuit. However, most people were in one of several main ones. The students for today's class should be arriving shortly. In the meantime, Rikku prepared her notes, set up the holovid and placed copies of the syllabus by the door.

As the first students entered RIkku smiled and watched as they picked up a syllabus and took a seat...
_____________
Once everyone was seated and the doors to the lecture hall closed, Rikku began. "Morning everyone! I am glad that you have chosen to come this series of special lectures. Today, we will begin with an introduction to the common employment venues. These careers are not suitable to everyone." Rikku glanced over everyone in the room, "Different people are better suited to different careers. For example, some have and want to take the time to pursue business. Others may thrive on the heart-pounding of combat careers. Please keep your personality, ethics and goals in mind when you are choosing a career! I would like to refer you to the syllabus that you picked up at the door. In addition, the attached data-cylinder has an audio lecture that covers the material of this class."

Rikku flicked up a new slide, "Inter-Stellar Kredit, is the standard currency, commonly called just ISK. The conversion between the CR and ISK is presently undetermined. As there is no cross-banking. Careers are based in space. As such, the ability to pilot ships is mandatory. The ships that are piloted could be models built here. If you choose to fly our ships you will need to get the capsuleer implants. So, why do I need ISK you may ask?"

Rikku paused for a few minutes, "The most obvious is that you need ISK to operate in the 'EVE-Galaxy' economy. This would of course include purchasing ships, docking rights to some stations etc. There is a less obvious reason. After passing the Standard Pilot Test (SPT), you are issued a pilot's license. Pilot's licenses are renewed by either a monthly, quarter-annual, bi-annual, or annual fee. ISK can also be used to buy a month license extension, called a Pilot's License Extension (PLEX). To purchase a PLEX, you must already possess a pilot's license. However, it is possible to keep one's pilot's license current through the use of PLEX If you choose that route it will be costly. Are there any questions so far? If not then let's us continue..."

"As there don't seem to be any questions we will continue." Rikku then brought up a holo-slide. "It is important to note that corporations are either governmental or private aka non-governmental. Alliances are formed between private corporations for mutual benefit, usually. These alliances operate outside of empire-space or at the fringe.

Instead of having large and unencumbered departments our government is run like a giga-corporation. This means that the tradiational departments are in fact corporations. Which are expected to be profitable or at least stable. For example there are trade/business, science/manufacturing and security government corporations.Judiciary aspects are controlled by CONCORD, which is a corporation in a sense. Legislative aspects are controlled by parties that act similar to corporations.

Private corporations are formed by individuals for various reasons or agendas. Many of the criminal organizations are technically corporations that choose to operation outside the social norm. These corporations are and can be extremely varied. Some are follow the accepted legal codes. Others are criminal. The important thing is to keep track of the alliances and who is in that alliance. As most politics are controlled in the fringe by the alliances." Rikku moves to the next set of slides after giving a couple minutes for people to finish taking notes.

"As you can see in the class materials there are five generic career paths: Industrial, Business, Exploration, Military and Outlaw." Rikku waits a moment to let people take notes and turn their attention back to her.

"Industrial careers are those most directly involved in economics: making and moving products. Within this category there are miners, refiners, haulers, manufacturer researchers and inventors. In actuality most that are miners also refine. Likewise, most manufacturers are also researchers and inventors. Together the pilots that undertake industry are the backbone of civilization and the economy."

"Business careers may seem similar to industrialists at first glance. Industrialists invest in making and moving products. Business careers are focused on investing ISK to earn returns. A new businessman or businesswoman will invest ISK or talents into corporations, the market or infrastructure.

Traders are those that opt to buy and sell goods and services, may not be pilot at all. This career path is analogous to stock trading or similar endeavors.

Corporate CEO is another way. Anyone could become the head of their own corporation. Once setup you can earn a salary from taxes or fees. Or you could negotiate with other corporations and alliances to gain access and rights to opportunities. Of the career paths this can be the most risky and rewarding.

Standings Pusher, are those that pursue and cultivate high-level social skills. These pilots work for themselves and generally for governmental corporations. They can then market their high-standings to non-governmental corporations to reduce the costs of jump-clone manufacturing or refining. This career choice is also very useful in playing the grey-area of society. As you would be in demand by both sides of the law."

"Exploration is still a very big money-maker. As you are probably aware, we haven't come close to truly exploring our galaxy. The majority of it is still very much uncharted.

Explorers search for and find things of value and then sell them to researchers or engineers. Most explorers will most of their time in wormhole-space also called W-Space. This is highly dangerous and many pilots lose their ships and/or killed. Luckily the capsuleers deaths are not permanent.

Salvagers are those that follow behind the battles in Zero-Sec Space aka Null-Space. Corporations and alliances are often in conflict there over promising resources or jockeying for political advantages. As such, there is often a war going on somewhere at any point in time. Salvagers are pilots that salvage equipment and materials from the wrecks. This can be very profitable. However, it is often best to work with a group of fellow pilots whom you trust."

"Military or security careers are very varied. In general, those that are skilled can gain employment anywhere. Regardless all of these paths are very intensive in the combat skills. As such, you will be expected to know how to fly your ship in combat and win. Of the pilots these are some of the most famous and infamous.

The most common are known as 'Mission Runners'. These pilots work for agents of government corporations. Usually this involves attacking and dealing various pirating concerns or escorting duties for government convoys. There are incursions into empire-space from time to time by one of the criminal corporations: specifically Sansha's Nation. These incursions are often very costly for all concerned but are and must be countered to maintain stability.

Ratters are pilots that hunt and destroy the ships of pirates. When possible this would include destroying their pods. Best to send them back to the clone-vat. This can be a very rewarding occupation but it has its drawbacks. It can cause some of these criminal corporations aka pirates to have a vendetta against you. So it is best to not rely only on this career if you plan to deal with those people at all.

Bounty Hunters are those pilots that actively hunt down criminals on behalf of CONCORD or other pilots. As a general rule these players will work closely with locator agents to find their targets. Locator agents are technically self-employed but many work for CONCORD. If you choose to be a bounty hunter avoid attacking targets in empire-space, also known as high-security or hi-sec space.

Lastly, there are faction warfare pilots. Despite being a single political entity in the Phoenix Empire, the old states are still autonomous in their own affairs. As the Phoenix Empire is a federation or alliance in terms of foreign policy and action. The PE doesn't have central authority over the states in internal matters. This means that on occasion hostilities between the four states, Gallente, Minmatar, Caldari or Amarr, will break out. Faction warfare pilots are employed by one of the states in a militia to fight another. This can be very profitable but it can also be very costly."

"Outlaw or criminal careers are mostly the same as what you might think. These involve such acts as stealing, murdering, vandalizing or scamming. At worst it gets you targeted by everyone, especially CONCORD. At best you might get flagged by that pilot and their corp or alliance. Regardless, it can be a very profitable if not adrenaline pumping.

Can-flippers are those pilots that steal from the storage-containers of miners. This may provoke a weak and feeble attack by the miner. The result is that you get kill rights on the miner but are only flagged by CONCORD for theft. This can also be very risky if that miner or miners have friendly combat pilots nearby. If you can do it successfully, it can be very rewarding.

Ninja Salvagers are pilots that follow others. This is different than the previous as it involves salvaging. Mostly this would be wrecks due to the labors of combat or security pilots. However, this is also very risky as those pilots are better armed and equipped than miners. Be sure that you pick your target wisely!

Pirate, are those pilots that specialize in capturing, pillaging or ransoming other pilots or their ships. These pilots must specialize in combat. However, they also need to have good judgement to avoid being pulverized by someone else. That said, this can also get you flagged by CONCORD, the state Navy and bounty hunters. In summary, this is really only an option if you are driven by combat for self-profit.

Suicide Ganker, are very interesting pilots. This is unlike bounty hunters that generally stalk their prey in low-sec or null-sec (low-security and zero-security space, respectively). Suicide gankers will initiate an unprovoked attack within hi-sec space. These actions will result in a prompt and lethal response from CONCORD. As such it is best to do with teammates to loot the wreck.

Lastly, there are drug dealers. Drug dealers are also called smugglers. As they transport and sell products that are illicit within a given state. This can be very profitable. However, it is risky as CONCORD will either destroy your ship or just conficscate the goods and fine you."

"Are there any questions at this point?"

Can't believe I'm sitting here listing to someone describe the basics of getting a career, a job, to me.

When the woman leading the lecture asked if there were any questions, Rei didn't even bother raising her hand as she called out from the back of the class, "I got one. Are you seriously describing to us the fundamentals of what a career is? I think anyone could describe what being an explorer is all about. If you're only here to give us a definition of all the different terms and ligno, I think a glossary would save you and everyone a lot of time."

There was hopefully more to this than a rundown of the different jobs out there, otherwise a career fair would have been a much more effective use of time, vendors from all the walks of life being able to better describe what it was all about. Still, it remained to be seen how the lecturer would respond the the question as Rei waited with bated breath, half expecting to be tossed out on her ear like some disruptive school kid.
