Helios Central Artificial Intelligence System
Drawing upon years of experimenting and experience with the highly successful Osiris AI,
the Helios was devised as a large scale AI to be intergrated into naval capital ships.
This project, however instated early, was not completed and available for until more
than three years later, in C1M30.
Helios is designed to handle virtually all of the ship's technical intelligence and
computing needs; navigational, tactical analysis, security monitoring, fire control,
encryption and expert advisory. One attempt to circumvent possible AI rebellion was
done by giving the system a certain measure of freedom. Helios has no forced override
codes, but it can be manually disconnected, and shut down with two secured hardware
keys, normally kept by the captain and the chief engineer. Generally, each ship's AI
is given its own nickname for daily use. Helios can direct but not reprogram onboard
droids plus droid control can be overridden by the ship's staff officers.
To ease interfacing with Helios, it can be directed vocally as well as through standard
computer panels. Helios detects and reports anomalous programming code, and automatically
isolate potential intrusion to the ship's staff, after which either ship's technicians and
/ or the AI can intervene to override and remove malicous slicing attempts. In order to
prevent AI corruption, incoming code cannot be hard-coded but must always remain monitored
by Helios, unless manual disconnect is in effect. There are no scheduled memory wipes, but
the system includes clean-up code subroutines. Currently the system is considered highly
secured against malicious code and slicing attempts.
During tests, one of the better uses of Helios was to optimize shield deflectors
against incoming fire. Shield operators are still recommended since the ship's sensors
can be thrown off by jamming, and they respond better to premature adjustments according
to ship's orders and changing battle conditions, providing more flexibility. Helios
remains superior in battle adjustments, that is, immediate optimization against fire
which is already actually striking the ship's shields. This can effectively extend a
ship's shields with about 5 to 20% in a combat situation.
