Ferret-class Recon Vessel

The Ferret is a New Republic spyship which officially does not exist. It is designed to slip unnoticed into patrolled space, look around, and leave as quietly as it came. Each one is a testament to modern stealth technology and costs millions of credits (for the special equipment installed. The craft itself comes at 890,000 Credits). The crew has virtually no quarters, so terms are kept short - always under three months, sometimes just a few days. Even so, tension is high onboard with paranoic attention paid to remain a non-target, as the crews are aware that they can expect no recovery missions.
Ferret ships have no names, only randomly selected and periodically changed numeric intervals. Current generation Ferrets are coated with sensor-baffling materials and equipped with the best sensor masking system available - a Fabritech system developed in a NR black project. It features both regular ion engines and a supercooled chemical-thrust baffled drive which leaves none of the common signature trails of ion drives. This chemical engine has fuel for only one hour and is kept only for emergency stealth drive. Normally the ship uses ion engines crawling at dead slow at system edges, while only drifting on inertia closer to the target, saving thrust only for course corrections.
Each Ferret comes equipped with a number of missiles and sensor decoys to be used in case of discovery. Its weapons are only meant for self-defence, destroying ship that comes too close, followed by a spread of decoys able to almost perfectly mimic any of a dozen ship signatures to confuse and mislead sensors. Ferrets are capable of working in tandem and communicating with friendlies with unidirectional laser-flash signallers.
There is no pilot. Ferrets are strictly going by autopilot, highly dedicated droid brains in order to save crew space and pilot weariness. The droid is unable to handle rapidly changing circumstances of combat, but is ideal for the slow and meticulous nature of Ferret piloting. Although capable of fair speed, the Ferret almost always travel at a dead slow to avoid detection. Typical Ferret spy missions involve a single stealthy pass through the heart of enemy territory, starting and ending at the far edges of the system.

Prowler-class Recon Vessel

Unlike the Ferret, Prowlers do exist officially, although under high classification. They were designed during the 'New Class' project, and as such builds on the frame of another ship. In this case, the Prowler is a Ferret-class with extended body and less equipment. They are only slightly less stealthy than Ferrets, and were designed as long-term spyships used primarily to keep an eye on assets already known to be in a particular place.
Prowlers operate much like Ferrets in that they slip in quietly, scout, and return equally quietly. The difference is that they spend on average two to three times as much time looking around and don't approach nearly as closely. While the Prowler's crew facilities are better than on the Ferret, it is still a cramped ship and keep its tours to under three months (both the Ferret and the Prowler aren't designed to stock more than three months of consumables). Like Ferrets, they have no name, only perodically changed random numbers in order to avoid leaving datatrails.
Current-generation Prowlers are coated with sensor-baffling materials and equipped with a highly advanced sensor masking system. The ship has an ion engine and a baffled drive identical to the Ferret, but with three hours of thrust. They are equipped with a larger stock of sensor decoys and missiles, although they preferrably remain unused. They are also designed to work in tandem and come with the same short-range laser-flash communication system as the Ferrets. The Prowler is piloted, but maintains a similar sophisticated autopilot as the Ferret for long stretches of inactivity. Prowlers move slowly to avoid detection.
Typical Prowler missions involve a long stealthy patrol on the edges of enemy systems with long-range scans peeking into Imperial-controlled systems. Additionally, Prowlers are used as perimeter patrols for defence taskforces on maneuvers.

Assault Gunboat

This gunboat is often referred to as Rebel Gunboat, but other organizations and civilians also use them. It is largely equivalent to the Imperial Ye-4 class, but with less armament. It also has a blind spot aft as the rear turret cannot aim downwards, although it has a ventral turret unlike the Ye-4.
