Information regarding Imperial Army Personnel. The above picture shows different troopers from the Grand Army of the Republic, which became the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps.

Stormtrooper

The Imperial Stormtroopers are the Galactic Marines of the NIF Federal Army. They are suited for all kinds of operations, but are mostly used for boarding actions, planetary assault, garrison duty, and policing.

Originally a force of Clone soldiers during the Clone Wars, the Stormtroopers gradually became an all-volunteer force from the Rise of the Empire and to the Era of Thrawn. When Thrawn rediscovered effective Spaarti cloning cylinders, cloned Stormtroopers quickly became more common. While the height of the New Order had so many Stormtroopers that it really didn't need or care for them, their subsequent increasing scarcity after the Battle of Endor led to improvements in tactics and technology to preserve the Stormtroopers that were still left.

Throughout their history, Stormtroopers have had the utmost in discipline, dedication, loyalty, and morale. They can storm a position without concern for fallen comrades to fulfill victory for the Emperor. They are however trained to surrender when faced with impossible odds, to live to fight another day. All Stormtroopers use a large variety of weapons depending on the mission requirements, with one or two heavy weapons specialists in every squad. Demolition and communications experts as well as other types of specialists are also commonly attached to Stormtrooper units.

Their armour is completely secure against light radiation, bio hazards or gas attacks. The helmet includes tongue-toggled comlink, Multi-Frequency Targeting and Acquisition System (MFTAS) and Holographic Vision Processors which enables the user to see through such nuisances as smoke, fog and darkness. The Automatic Polarized Lenses protects against flash grenades and blinding light. They also have a 20 minute emergency air supply in case of temporary exposure to vacuum or underwater conditions (extra oxygen tanks may be carried for extensive operations in vaccuum). All troops have IFF transponders for identification, and utility packs with various equipment such as spare powerpacks, comlink, extra breath filters, high-tension wire, grappling hooks, ion flares, concentrated rations, water, medical supplies, survival equipment, anti-radiation pills, two detoxification hyposprays, macrobinoculars, binders, de-ionizer, spray seal (blinds cameras), extra oxygen, etc, depending on mission profile and trooper subtype.

Sandtrooper

The Imperial Stormtroopers are the Galactic Marines of the NIF Federal Army. They are suited for all kinds of operations, but are mostly used for boarding actions, planetary assault, garrison duty, and policing.

Sandtroopers are one of many specialized troop types used by the Empire. They are recruited from regular recruits which have displayed aptitude for or already have suitable training, for instance as natives from desert planets. They are indentical to regular Stormtroopers but have additional training in high temperature environments such as deserts and jungles. They have advanced cooling units, moisture recycling systems, and additional heat dissipation systems built into their armor and helmets. They also carry extra food and water supplies, a portable shelter, an oxygen canister, long-range comlinks, extra ammunition and powerpacks and a mobile power souce for blaster rifles. A distinctive feature of Sandtroopers is that they use a coloured pauldron for rank id. Private - black, Squad leader - orange, Sergeant - white.

While trained in using military repulsorcraft, Sandtroopers often make use of local animals since the harsh environments they operate in often make transportation less useable. In addition to heat-reflective coated white armor, they have access to desert or jungle camouflaged variants. They also have training in desert survival, camouflage, small-unit tactics and tracking. Sandtroopers often operate in smaller teams with greater autonomy than regular Stormtroopers. They often use long-ranged weapons although their standard arm is the E-11.

Elite Guard

The Imperial Elite Guard is a Stormtrooper Corps subdivision which is virtually identical to standard stormtroopers. Except better. They are combat veterans, hardened by years of fighting in every imagineable environment. Their morale and esprit de corps is of the highest standard, and their combat ability is unquestioned.

Elite Guards are often assigned to headquarters or VIP protection of officers who do not qualify for protection of the Royal Guard.

Scout Trooper

Scout Troopers are light reconnaisance infantry, typically deployed together with standard infantry units in vanguard postions. They use high speed vehicles, typically speederbikes, to quickly scout and survey areas, locate and follow enemy positions. This has also earned them the nickname biker scouts. Occasionally they may infiltrate enemy lines to perform sabotage missions. A tactic often used by scout troopers is to race past a group of enemy infantry or vehicles and drop deadly thermal detonators while escaping to safety. Scouts typically operate in groups of four called lances, each led by a sergeant. They often work together with other light reconnaissance vehicles, such as AT-STs. Imperial Scout Troopers evolved from the Republic Grand Army BARC troopers, but with much greater numbers (over 400 million in service in the First Galactic Empire), the scout troopers are less advanced. They also have a secondary function as snipers, using blaster rifles with laser scopes, albeit they are not as elite as the Imperial Sniper Corps, which has special training, vehicles and weapons.

Scouts wear different armour than standard Stormtroopers. It is more lightweight and considerably more flexible, starting with a body glove that is not form fitting and more like a flightsuit, for greater mobility. Their helmets also contain a macro binocular viewplate and a sensor system that allows them to see in a 180-degree arc, and they connect directly to their bike's sensor systems, instantly feeding and processing terrain information. Scouts can operate independantly for several weeks.

Imperial Marksman

Where the Imperial Sniper Corps forms its own division in the Stormtrooper Corps, regular marksmen makes up the bulk of snipers in the Imperial Army. They are not as highly trained in concealment, infiltration, reconnaissance and observation techniques, but they are highly accurate shooters. The base requirement to join the marksmen is the ability to hit the eye of a womp rat at 2000 meters. While the elite Snipers advance into enemy territory largely on their own, marksmen usually operate closer to regular army units, albeit often in forward positions.

Storm Commandos

The Army counterpart to the Intelligence Commando. It is one of the most elite troops in the Empire, with only the best of veteran Stormtroopers selected into it for further training. Their primary function is counter-insurgency, siege breaking, and sabotage, however Storm Commandos have served in almost any function that requires stealth, such as the aquirement of enemy technology and infiltration of governments. In every mission they have undertaken, Imperial Storm Commandos have served with honour and often with success.

While every Commando is an excellent marksman and perfectly able to defend himself against an enemy or two at a time, the Storm Commando is not suited for heavy combat operations. Their name is due to their part in the Stormtrooper Corps rather than any heavy assault function. Storm Commandos have access to equipment specialized for their use, such as an alternative lighter armor, 74-Z speeder bikes modified for speed and stealth, TIE Hunters and capital Imperial Escort Carriers (with two wings of TIE Hunters plus assault shuttles). While their signature armor is superficially similar to Scout Troopers, it absorbs light, sound, and sensor energy, increasing stealth.

EVO Trooper

The EVO trooper, or Environmental Trooper, are among the Empire's most specialized soldiers. They were picked from the Stormtrooper Corps for their aggression (and originally for their hatred of non-human species) and given special training. They wear a heavier armour with breathing tubes, capable of operating in all sorts of hazardous environments such as extreme heat, acid rivers, and electric storms. Eventually the EVO troopers resulted in the creation of the heavy infantry Hazard Trooper variant.

Specifications:

Hazard Trooper

Hazard Troopers are elite infantry units with individual troopers in heavy suits of powered armour which lends tremendous strenght to the user. They are developed for deployment in the most extreme of climates and are completely immune to acid and any form of temperature extreme. Hazard troopers can even walk through molten lava unharmed (like Magma Troopers). The suit is a hermetically sealed and fully functional space suit, and the trooper can survive underwater or in space for up to three days. Naturally they are also immune to any form of biohazard or poision. The suit has all the normal functions of Stormtrooper armour, complete with a Heads Up Display, tactical computer, built-in visual/IR sensors and comlink. The hazard trooper's suit has a built-in rocket pack for maximum mobility and redeployment speed (plus propulsion in space), and is strong enough to resist lightsabres to an extent. Hazard troopers are similar to Imperial Darktroopers in their heavy power armour, but without Force training.

Specifications:

Exogen-class Darktroopers

There are several different versions of Darktroopers, and development of Dark Troopers was delayed a few years due to a rebel attack on the project installation. Phase I and II are battle droids which were used for the development of the phase III power armour. The troops are elite Stormtroopers, enhanced from the norm either by limited Dark Side training, or with cyborg implants. They were the Emperor's Elite, the most fearsome army force in the galaxy.

Darktroopers use huge 2,9 m tall suits of powered armour which is actually a fully functional droid that may be able to fight on after its user is incapacitated. Sometimes Darktroopers use their suits as seperate war droids, fighting alongside them in battle. The suit lends tremendous strenght to its user, making a Darktrooper able to rip vehicles by sheer force. Mostly they tend to use heavy weapons, but sometimes they have been deployed without power armour.

Darktrooper armour is invulnerable to all but the heaviest handweapons and features a repulsorlift pack with maneuvering jets which allow the troops to land on their own when dropped from high altitude, or even maneuver in space. They have magnetic boots and are also capable of jump-jet relocation and even extensive flying operations in the air. When first deployed in battle, a squad of 12 Darktroopers eliminated all rebel resistance on the planet Takay while suffering no losses and leaving no surivors. Darktroopers are extensions of the Emperor's will, ferociously assaulting with no regards to losses until the enemy has been exterminated. Internal acceleration compensators prevent the Darktrooper from being knocked down by explosions. Like regular Stormtroopers, Darktroopers come with built-in low-light and infrared enhancers, vocoders, and multichannel comlinks.

Specifications:

Name/Type: Phase III Exogen-class Darktrooper

S.T.A.R.S.

Along with the abolishment of the political police CompForce, a need for a specialized military and special circumstances police within the NIF was evident. S.T.A.R.S. stands for Security Tactical Action Rapid Solution, and is a special type of Stormtroopers used for internal security and law enforcement by the NIF aboard ships and bases. Whenever there is a crime committed, STARS will be there in minutes. They use a lot more nonlethal weapons than ordinary Stormtroopers (such as riot shields, stun staves, stun grenades, flashbangs spray sticks and so on), but they are efficient, elite, and prepared to use whatever force necessary to carry out their tasks. The S.T.A.R.S. motto is: My Honour Is My Life. Any STARS trooper found to commit a crime - even a minor one - is immediately discharged from their commission (although not necessarily from their service in the Army), and may not re-join until they have served their crime and are re-approved.

STARS hail back to the Coruscant Guard (aka the Imperial Guard). While originally using a heavier version of Stormtrooper armour, they now use armour similar to that of the old Imperial Guard. The function is identical to that of Stormtrooper armour, but it has a distinctive design and colouration, plus it has extra padding and offers excellent protection against physical attacks, particularly fists, projectile slugs, and vibroweapons. STARS is a part of and draws its members from the Stormtrooper Corps, though they often work closely with the Judicial Corps and occasionally ISS Operatives. In matters concerning their direct area of responsibility - military security and police work, they can arrest any civilian and any military officer up to three ranks above their own without permission from a higher authority, after which the judicial branch takes over.

All troops have IFF transponders for identification, and utility packs with various equipment such as spare powerpacks, comlink, extra breath filters, high-tension wire, grappling hooks, ion flares, concentrated rations, water, medical supplies, survival equipment, anti-radiation pills, two detoxification hyposprays, macrobinoculars, binders, de-ionizer, spray seal (blinds cameras), etc. Extra oxygen is not normally carried. The helmet includes scrambled comlinks, connecting one trooper to another, and the unit commander's helmet includes a voice-controlled heads-up display of trooper positions.

Imperial Royal Guard

The Royal Guard are handpicked Stormtroopers who receive addtional training, in every weapon known to the Empire, including melee weapons. They are also trained in a dozen forms of unarmed combat, particularly a more brutal, efficient, and less flashy form of Echani. Their signature weapon is the Force Pike. Royal Guards are also trained fighter pilots and has a custom-built TIE Interceptor as signature craft. They are, in short, the most proficient soldiers in the Empire.

In addition to military training, Royal Guards are Force Sensitives, and train in the use of Force Powers. The most skilled and experienced of Royal Guards may go on to become full fledged Dark Jedi.

The Royal Guard's primary function is to protect the Emperor, and by extension, the royal family of the Empire. By the Emperor's assignment, they are also assigned to protect important locations and VIPs. Their exact number is classified. Guards are cycled out to the frontlines every six months to maintain their combat skills. While they usually have ceremonial (but fully functional) armour, they then either use standard Stormtrooper armour or a customized, red and black version of it, depending on the secrecy of their deployment. Either version of their armour is as functional and protective as Stormtrooper standard. Royal Guards have their own battle language, known only to them.

Imperial Shadow Guard

Little is known about the Royal Guard. To most people, they are simply bodyguards to the Emperor, found next to his person at all times. The Imperial Royal Guard has its own intelligence service, however, which focuses on finding threats to the Emperor, and the Shadow Guard is the special operations force which finds and eliminates such threats pre-emptively, often before they can even materialize.

Shadow Guards are second only to the Sovereign Protectors in the Guard's internal status hierarchy. They often lead Imperial Commandos or Shadow Stormtroopers to augment their numbers, in specops against the Emperor's enemies. Like Protectors, they are Force sensitives and trained in the use of the Dark Side. They focus on directly offensive powers. They are even able to use the Maelstrom power which combines the use of telekinesis and Force lightning into a both defensive and destructive bubble. Their signature weapon is the lightspear, essentially a lightsabre on a staff.

Specifications:

Name/Type: Imperial Shadow Guard
Organization: Stormtrooper Corps
Division: Special Forces
Subdivision: Imperial Royal Guard
Designation: Light Infantry
Standard Weapons: 1 Lightspear, 1 DeathHammer Blaster Pistol

Join Requirements

Enlisted Trooper. Not allowed to join.
Commissioned Officer: Minimum Rank Level Achieved: 5. Must be a Imperial Royal Guard and receive training in the use of Force skills.

Imperial Sovereign Protector

Sovereign Protectors are an even more elite cadre of Royal Guards who are Force sensitive and receive training in use of the Force. They also train in using lightsabres although they do not build their own and do not use such since use of the lightsabre is restricted to the Dark Jedi serving the Emperor. They are able to use their signature weapon, the Force Glaive, to block and deflect blaster bolts much like a lightsabre, and their cutting power is comparable.

Sovereign Protectors are assigned to protect the highest VIPs. Their exact number is classified. Guards are cycled out to the frontlines every six months to maintain their combat skills. They then either use standard Stormtrooper armour or a customized, red and black version of it, depending on the secrecy of their deployment. Like regular Guardsmen, they use the Guard Interceptor as signature fighter craft. Protectors wear a ceremonial armour which is considerably superior when compared with standard Stormtrooper armour (+50% physical resistance [=rating 30], +100% energy resistance [=rating 20]).

Specifications:

Name/Type: Imperial Sovereign Protector
Organization: Stormtrooper Corps
Division: Special Forces

Armoured Assault Crew

Heavy armour crew usually work in small teams. AT-ATs require two crewmen, SPHA require 15, and so on. They wear an enclosed suit with extensive life support lasting up to two weeks, similar to TIE fighter pilots flight suits. AT-AT cockpits and most other heavy armoured vehicles are pressurized, but the suit is worn in all combat situations in case of an emergency hull breach in a hostile environment (which can be an enemy gas or biological attack, for instance).

Shocktroopers

Shocktroopers are Stormtroopers with heavy armour, heavy weapons and shock and awe tactics (which is where the name "shock" troopers comes from). They have extensive training in anti-armour operations and can be reckoned among the best support troops in the Galaxy. Working in groups. They are lethal to all enemy vehicles with their powerful missiles.

Nova-class Stormtroopers

While the Grand Army of the Republic initially was an elite force with limited numbers, more clonetroopers were mass-produced as quickly as possible with lesser standard than the original Kaminoan GeNodes, which took ten years to train. After the Clone Wars, the Grand Army was converted into the Stormtrooper Corps, and their numbers expanded upon greatly until it was the signature force of the Empire, consisting of many billions of stormtroopers. Unfortunately, losses in the Clone Wars coupled with mass production lead to most Stormtroopers being a poorly flash-trained force which could barely aim their weapons in the right direction, much less use proper tactics.

While elite divisions still existed and was continually trained among the Stormtroopers, such as Caridan recruits, the vast majority was little more than blaster fodder. Since the Empire largely enjoyed internal peace after the Clone Wars, ensured by the Imperial Navy, most Stormtroopers ended up in policing functions and the lowered quality was not considered a problem. This fact cemented the attitude of Imperial command toward clone troopers as being blaster fodder, and extended to the TIE pilot corps as well.

In some situations, however, it was found that most Stormtroopers were no longer able to properly carry out their primary function - infiltration and shock tactics against heavily fortified positions. Thus the Nova-class Stormtroopers were created as an elite asssault force, with armor that could take a grenade detonation at point blank range like Katarn class heavy armor, and with great skill in both a multitude of primarily heavy weapons and infiltration tactics.

While not their intended function, the success of the Novatroopers in assault operations and their skill in infiltration tactics also meant they became used for commando missions, often leading Imperial commandos in special operations, particularly infiltration missions. They are distinguished by their gold and black armor. The post-Endor Empire suffered from dwindling numbers of Stormtroopers until Thrawn re-booted the cloning program with again improved quality, plus recruits trained to equal levels. In this environment, Novatroopers became specialist troops in heavy assault and infiltration tactics, with standard Stormtroopers filling the bulk of the similar missions. (Ref: the fluff is original).

Nova-class Darktroopers

In a similar vein to the Nova-class Stormtroopers taking over the specialist mission of infiltration and heavy assault against fortified positions, a Nova-class Darktrooper variant was created in the wake of the original Darktrooper project. Nova-class Darktroopers were programmed to assault rebel ships and fortifications.

They are refinements of the original Phase II Darktroopers, rather than the Phase III versions, and like other Phase II variants, they are advanced battle droids, not soldiers. They are made to operate independently of organic beings, but can be commanded in the field by war droid operators.

They are very heavily armored and wear repulsorpacks for extended flight operations, but can be considered more standard troops for heavy assault than the aforementioned Phase III classes. They use heavy blaster rifles rather than assault cannons, and have no built-in missiles. Still, they represent a formidable force against any rebel incursion.

Name/Type: Phase II Nova-class Darktrooper
Organization: Stormtrooper Corps
Division: War Droid Operations
Designation: Heavy Infantry Battle Droid
Standard Weapons: 1 DC-15a Heavy Blaster Rifle, 4 Concussion Grenades

Enlisted Army Trooper

Although the Imperial Army sees most of frontline combat, every planet also has a large bulk of regular troopers. Their standard uniforms are identical to the navy's, except grey. They carry supplies and survival gear in their utility belt. Typical training involves hand-to-hand, blasters, heavy weapons, grenades, repulsorlift operation, evasion, survival, vehicle operation, and tactics. They are equipped with field armour and a blast helmet with built-in comlink, plus a flash-suppression visor. These troopers are generally confident and eager for combat, and they carry surprisingly strong loathe for rebels.

NIF Original Supplement: One difference from the original army of the Galactic Empire is that NIF army regulars have uniforms made of micro-fibre which automatically alters colouration and pattern to blend into the environment. The effect runs on a low charge which is self-sustained by light, and it can be turned off at the flick of a switch.

Spacetrooper Mk I

Spacetroopers is an elite of Stormtroopers only second to the Imperial Royal Guard in skill and loyalty. They wear heavily armoured, powered suits made specifically for operations in the zero gravity of space. The suit is designed to be worn while also wearing Stormtrooper armour, although it is possible but awkward to use it without. The armour has an arsenal of heavy weapons integral to the suit and functions like an independant spacecraft. They are used mainly for boarding actions when airlocks are unavailable, or when heavy fire support is needed. They are also able to engage in space combat and destroy starfighters.

The suit has four hours of power and ten hours of oxygen. They have a repulsorlift unit, sensor array, long-range comlink, dual flashlights, fire extinguisher, environmental control, magnetic boots, status screen, and a rear-view screen which enables the trooper to look behind him. The heavy armour of the suit allows it to take on most firearms with no damage. It is rated at 2 RU and is have thrusters capable of reaching an acceleration of 11 MGLT. It also protects against radiation. The suit can operate in vacuum as well as atmospheric conditions, but it is unsuited for operations inside a gravity field. It also lends tremendous physical strenght to its user, but the suit is bulky and is 27% slower than a regular Stormtrooper when walking.

Aside from being trained in using the powered armour suit to its fullest, Spacetroopers are also trained in demolitions, high radiation operations, starship gunnery, astrogation, and survival. They are the most heavily armed and armoured troops in the Empire, possibly in the Galaxy. Even with this arsenal at their disposal, the powerful spacetroopers tend to have high casualty rates given their task, and as a result they are utterly fearless and will not surrender, instead they are always trying to inflict as much damage as possible before going down. Spacetroopers are usually deployed in a platoon of 40 troopers, which is usually enough to overtake even a capital ship.

Spacetrooper Mk III

Thrawn introduced a more form-fitting variant of Spacetrooper, considerably different from the bulky Mk I and Mk II versions. It offers much better agility, but reduces firepower, propulsion, and armour greatly. The Mk III is consequently more suited to space battles, where the armour strenght is of subordinate interest when up against starfighter lasers and light turbolaser cannons. One hit is usually fatal regardless. Their improved agility and tiny size makes them difficult targets, while they are still have enough firepower to threaten small starships. (Ref: This armour variant has not yet been officially named Mk III, but the armour difference is officially noted at sw.com)

Scout troopers has used green camouflage armour since the formation of the corps during the Clone Wars, but the swamp trooper corps armour has gradually changed to better suit the environment this scout trooper segement operates in.

The current suit is fully sealed so that the trooper can hide in a swamp even in areas with poisonous liquids or atmosphere. They have specialized rebreathers which allows them to stay underwater for days if necessary.
